be agile

Today’s technology allows dynamic inter-connectivity and flexibility in our working hours and patterns frequently challenging the need for cellular offices and assigned desks.

Rapidly evolving workforce demographics and the desire for workplaces to become more flexible and cost-effective, sees more than 30% of organisations looking to adopt agile working.

Agile working is about changing work practices, deploying new technologies and creating new working environments, and it’s being adopted by more and more organisations. In 2012 PeoplePerHour.com reported that 68% more businesses were hiring remote workers than at the same period in 2011. DWP in 2011 reported that 65% of employers said flexible working practices had a positive effect on recruitment and retention.

So what is and how do you be agile ?

Agile working : can be said when an organisation takes an intelligent approach to space, technology, people and process, allowing it to develop and support new workstyles, cultures, organisational structures and management styles.

Agile workstlyes : describe the user dynamic.  A research project in collaboration with The Royal College of Art, London, was based on the working activities of the Solution Workers. It determined four key typologies: the Anchor, the Connector, the Gatherer and the Navigator. Each with different office user traits, showing contrasts primarily in the areas of mobility and »spheres of influence« both in and outside the office.

p2-management-01Anchors :  prefer a fixed workplace in the office. Spending almost the entire day at their workplace, the Anchor user needs a solution custom-made to their needs that incorporate a high level of comfort. Design, acoustics and ergonomics have to be right.

Connectors :  are the in-house wanderers: their spatial needs are flexible, using all zones and areas within the office. Connectors work at their desks for about half of their working day. The other half is spent in meetings throughout the office environment. They manage the flow of information, gathering and distributing it as required.

parcs_new2012_14Gatherers :  also spend their time outside the office building. Workdays are defined by meeting clients and colleagues, however when they are in the office, Gatherers need a place to concentrate, as well as areas for communication and interaction.

Navigators :  are constantly out and about, rarely in the office. They work in hotels, cafés or at home. However, when they return to the office they need to feel welcome. The Navigator considers flexible space utilisation and the open choice of work environments, both important and inspiring.

Collectively, Solution Workers, need a working environment that promotes networking and information exchange.  In addition to supporting their daily operations, they require an office landscape that feeds the creativity needed to achieve innovation.
